The Gorilla Glass brand of the American manufacturer Corning Inc. is one of the most recognized and durable types of glass in the world, used in countless industries.
Although its history dates back to the early 1960s, what made Gorilla Glass famous was its collaboration with Apple, through Steve Jobs, who wanted a glass screen for devices, not plastic. The first iPhone was also the first smartphone to boast Gorilla Glass protection, which until then was only used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, automotive or aeronautics.
What makes Gorilla Glass so special? The answer is resistance to impact and scratches. Corning stood out with a product with a layer of alkali-type aluminosilicate glass, one of the advantages of which is resistance to damage, the fact that it is thin and light.
Corning’s latest product is Gorilla Glass 3, released in 2013. Gorilla Glass 3 differs from its predecessor, Gorilla Glass 2, which was thinner than the previous product, with increased scratch resistance and reduced scratch visibility. Although Apple was the one who started the association of Gorilla Glass with smartphones, the American company is not part of the official list of customers.
However, among them are Samsung, Nokia, LG, HTC, Motorola, but also Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, HP, totaling 33 brands. As expected, given that Samsung aims to surpass the patterns with each appearance, if Samsung Galaxy S3 uses Gorilla Glass 2, its successor, Samsung Galaxy S4 has opted for Gorilla Glass 3.
But Corning doesn’t stop there. After Gorilla Glass 3, launched in early 2013, at the end of July this year the American manufacturer launched Gorilla Glass NBT, designed especially for notebooks, respectively touch screen technology and promise a resistance to damage greater than 8-10 times than the traditional screen.
Analyzing all this, we can only ask ourselves: Why apply a protective film to a gadget with a Gorilla Glass screen? The answer could also come from Apple, the first to use this type of glass. They are now testing the sapphire screen, which is even more resistant to scratches, even though Gorilla Glass offers twice as much shock protection as sapphire.
But since the sapphire screen is much more expensive ($ 30) and Gorilla Glass is much more effective against bumps than scratches, all you have to do is fill it with a protective foil for maximum protection. In addition to the benefits of Gorilla Glass, the foil protects against dust, fingerprints and offers many other benefits, depending on the type.
